Little Jasmine:
A Short Film
Role: Look Developer  / Concept Artist / Modeler
It's a first 3D project for a school assignment.
It took us about five months to complete. The idea was to build a 2D-inspired visual style using a 3D mesh. Through the design of the house, the characters, and the story, we wanted to reflect elements of Vietnamese culture—especially the warmth of family love.
The story follows An, a ten-year-old girl who, after watching a gardening TV show, decides to grow a jasmine plant. Together with her father, she faces many challenges along the way, from planting the seed to finally seeing it bloom. In the end, it’s not just about a child’s curiosity—An grows the jasmine to place on her mother’s grave as a birthday gift.
We spent about two months in pre-production (research, scriptwriting, scheduling, and developing character and background concepts) and three months in production and post-production.
As beginners, we were aware that we couldn’t deliver professional-level quality within the given deadline and with our current skills. So, we agreed with a strategy to prioritize art direction—focusing on concept art, modeling, and lighting—while keeping other aspects like rigging and animation at a more basic level.
From translating 2D concepts into 3D models, we faced two main challenges:
     Maintaining consistency in visual style.
Building solid base meshes for rigging.

Hair design was another unexpected difficulty. We had to construct large hair pieces carefully so they would look natural. Shading, on the other hand, was an enjoyable process—we experimented with different coloring techniques to achieve a 2D look while keeping details like the nose, cheeks, and lips visible.
Rigging turned out to be the most challenging stage. It required precision to achieve smooth animation. We encountered issues such as sharp-looking elbows when bent and overlapping between clothing and skin. While not all problems were fully solved, we managed to reduce them to an acceptable level.
